Chapter Thirty

With the alliance with House Agroti firmly cemented, House Talal could now grow its forces from a few hundred souls to almost a thousand. As their training continued Lykos happily assigned them to various posts, patrolling Pyrgos or guarding one of House Talal's many businesses, to give them useful experience. However during this period of growth he was not idle in his own training.

Stepping his training with Illusionist Maeve up several notches, he began to push the limits of his magic to extremes. Holding swords in air through will alone, crumbling a rocky incline with a touch, breathing underwater, or summoning waves of fire or lightning, he found himself improving in leaps and bounds. However it was the creation of a magical golem that he found himself struggling the most with.

Illusionist Maeve could summon five elemental golems with a wave of her hand, each a perfect aspect of the element they were made of. Yet Lykos could only summon a half-formed aspect, regardless of the element, that would tremble and collapse after a handful of heartbeats. Trying and failing for weeks was beginning to take its toll on the young lord and Illusionist Maeve angrily called their lesson to a close.

Trembling with exhaustion Lykos looked a sorry sight, drenched in sweat and his heart beating heavily. Within him his magic seemed to tense and snap back into place, eager to be away from the failed water construct before him. The water splashed harmlessly to the ground and over the side of the stone platform in the Talal ritual chamber.

“My magic feels tense, reluctant,” Lykos informed Illusionist Maeve who looked almost disappointed. “Like it's refusing to form the magic of the golems instructor.”

Illusionist Maeve tutted. “It is as I feared. Your magic is too resistant to this field. It's not unexpected although it is unfortunate.”

“What do you mean resistant instructor?” he asked although he had a small idea what she meant. His magic practically fled from the semi-sentience of the golems.

“Magic is temperamental. It reacts to everyone differently and what may be easy for one person may be impossible for another. Through time, patience, and will power the gap may be closed but that's not an option for you just yet.”

“Is that why you're so good at illusions?” Illusionist Maeve still started every lesson by putting him under illusions. Sometimes he would break one only to find himself in an entirely different place. One memorable time he participated in an entire lesson while unknowingly under the influence of an illusion. His mentor had not been impressed and had punished him severely.

“Yes, as well as the creation of these golems and enchanting. The fields are similar to one another, putting magic into another substance. Your talents lean more towards much more direct combat than I favor.”

“So I can never learn those fields?” Lykos asked displeased. All three fields were extraordinarily useful and being denied them was vexing. Illusionist Maeve shook her head.

“Not quite. It would just take you years of effort instead of months like it did for me.
